Chapter 56: Danger Close
I tried to look around to see if I could spot the enemies, but it was simply too dark. The mist seemed to have gotten a lot thicker inside of these walls which wasn't a good thing for my eyes.
I couldn't send a mana pulse either since I was still hanging off of the wall, I needed to be on the ground for the pulse to actually matter.
This left me to simply rely on my boss until we made it to the ground.
He and I were both looking at each other, I nodded my head to confirm I saw the signal as he still was holding it up.
I could only reply with my head as both my hands were occupied with holding onto a crack and I was too weak to let one of them go. I didn't even know if I could hang here much longer, it was getting that bad.
While we were still looking at each other I tried saying words silently, hoping he could perhaps read my lips.
"How close are they?" I said slowly and silently hoping that he would be able to see what I was saying. However, he only gave me a confused look.
'Shit I forget he doesn't speak the human language, how the hell would he be able to read my lips.' I wanted to hit myself for forgetting such an important thing, but the translator was so good it made me forget he spoke a different language.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtHe started climbing up the wall slowly making his way over to me. He positioned himself to directly to my left, he was hanging on quite a small crack but looked to be fine with it.
"There are two energy signatures I'm picking up on the outskirts of the city. They are about three hundred feet away from us." He whispered into my ear.
"I can't hang here much longer sir, my body is about to give out. If we have to fight that's fine with me, but being here puts us at a major disadvantage." I whispered into his ear.
"Okay we can head down, but we will try not to engage them. Getting into a battle this early is never a good sign."
My boss started making his way down the wall and I did as well. When I finally reached the ground I started to rub my fingers to help relieve some of the soreness.
I was physically tired as well, but I never let my breathing get out of control. The whole area was dead silent as well, even with my hearing enhanced I couldn't hear a single sound.
"Let's wait here until they start moving, fighting now will really be a worst case scenario. You can also take this time to recover, it seems that climb has taken a toll on you." My boss whispered into my ear, we were both on one knee while our backs where to the wall.
"Why a worst case scenario?"
"Fighting produces a lot of noise, everything in this city will probably hear it. That means we will get a whole lot of unwanted attention. One fight can turn into a major battle which will take not only a lot of time, but energy as well. There are too many risks, until we are forced then we will make a move."
I tried to look into the city but multiple trees were in my way, not only that but the mist had gotten a lot thicker.
My visions had been suppressed quite a lot by this mist, it was becoming quite annoying. It also seemed like the mist was disrupting me from using natural mana.
Mana that doesn't come from one's body is called natural mana, this mist was stopping me from controlling it.
When I had tried sending a mana pulse through the ground almost nothing came back, the mist had basically blocked the pulse. Since the pulse heavily relies on natural mana it was basically deemed useless until the mist went away.
'So far, my ability is really being put to the test. This area is truly making me feel quite useless, I need to start adapting or I may end up being killed.'
This environment was quite brutal, it hasn't even been that long and I can already start seeing some of my weaknesses start to show.
"MOVE NOW!" My boss yelled while I felt a hard push on the side of my arm.
I took the momentum jumped as far as I could to the right, the next moment a spear landed right where my head was. The spear was made out of stone and was able to slightly penetrate the wall behind me.
I got into a sprinter position while one of my hands grabbing the hilt of my sword. I then started to enhance my entire body while waiting for my opponents to make their next move.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmI still could not tell where they were and I had no idea what the terrain would look like. I was in the dark and fully unprepared for a surprise assault.
"Diggory you will have to rush in and engage in close combat, I will support from behind. They are 200 feet directly in front of us, you have to go now!"
I felt reluctant to simply rush in, but I was nothing but a sitting duck this far out.
I decided I had no other choice and had to take the attack to them, if I decided to only stay here I would be the only one getting attacked. I had to even out the playing field.
I started sprinting through the trees and made sure to not follow one straight line. I had to make I was a hard target to hit, I kept my eyes forward as well to see any attacks coming in.
I did still keep my guard up against my boss, but these two were the main priority. If he tried to attack me, I only had my instincts to rely on to doge it.
I started to see another stone spear coming my way, it was easily dodged as its speed wasn't all that impressive. With the object being big in size as well it was easy to see.
After 100 feet I finally saw the two attackers, they wore the same black gear as me but had masks covering their faces. Their identities were a completely mystery, I couldn't even see their hair because of their hoods.
One was holding a large two handed axe while the other was casting spells. I decided to engage the one with the axe as he would be the main threat this close.
I unsheathed my longsword and increased my speed further by shifting more ki to my legs. I cut the distance in a matter of seconds and swung my sword directly towards the man's neck.
My eyes were analyzing every movement the man would make, he slightly shifted his axe to block my swing. As soon as I felt the connection, I raised my leg and kicked him in the abdominal area.
This moved back only a tiny bit, but it had confirmed my thoughts on his physical strength.
'He's physically stronger than me...'
