Theodore laid on the hospital bed with a hollow look in his eyes.

He had asked himself countless times why he was still alive.

Why was he in the hospital when he opened his eyes? He was the only one living in that house, with no servants on duty.

He was all alone, surrounded by a pile of wine bottles, fully intending to drink to his death. He was all prepared to welcdeath, and even thought he saw the grim reaper waving his hands at him. Yet, when he next opened his eyes, he found himself in the hospital.

It was dark and silent in the ward. The air felt as though it was frozen, the silence deafening.

Theodore looked out the window, and saw a weak ray of sunshine peeking shyly through the curtains. It was as bashful as a young lover, but he could still feel the warmth on his cheeks.

Unfortunately, this ray of sunshine wasn't enough to resist the gloom in his heart. All it did was to trace the outline of his emaciated and haggard face.

He hated the sunshine.

The door to the ward suddenly opened and Sydney walked in. She had a bouquet of fresh flowers in hand, which she began displaying in a vase.

Theodore continued lying silently on the bed, as if he didn't see her at all.

A light fragrance filled the air in the room.

Theodore furrowed his brows. "What are you doing here?" "My son almost died. Can't I come?" When Sydney received a call from the hospital, she was scared out of her wits and hurriedly made her way here. Thankfully, the doctor managed to resuscitate Theodore.

"Theo, why exactly are you doing this? You clearly know that you can't touch alcohol. Why did you drink so much? Must you make your family worry and suffer because of you? You're clearly tired of living!" Theodore smirked. "I'm sorry for putting you through such agony." Theodore's face was pale as a sheet, and his eyes looked soulless. The usual color on his cheeks had faded, leaving behind deathly gray in its wake.

His eyes had lost their usual radiance. They looked dim and hazy, like the fuzzy reflection of the moon on the surface of a lake.

Theodore's cold voice broke Sydney's heart.

"Even if not for your dad and I, won't you think for Grandma? She raised you when you were young, she..." "She has dementia now," Theodore said, cutting Sydney off. "She doesn't even recognize who I am now, so what if I die? Just find someone who looks likeas a replacement and she'll take him as me, just like how Aurora took Rose's place before." Theodore looked coldly at her, his voice drenched with hopelessness. "Everyone can be replaced in this world." Just as how Sebastian replaced him.

"No, Theo. You're wrong. You're the only one in this world and you're irreplaceable. You're my son, and you...you'll be someone's father in the future." She really wanted to tell Theodore that he was now a father.

However, she was worried that telling him now after hiding it from him for so long might break him even further. He wasn't in a good condition right now, and was just resuscitated. He probably wouldn't be able to take the shock.

She was even more worried that he might end up hating everyone.

Theodore's brows furrowed at her words. "What did you say?" "I meant..." Sydney wiped the tears from her face. "You'll eventually get married and have children of your own and be a father one day. If your child ends up like you, won't you be in agony too? Theo, pull yourself together, won't you? I'm begging you." Theodore pursed his lips, silently letting the bitterness in his heart overwhelm him. Sydney's words seemed to deepen the unspeakable pain in him.

"I'll never have my own child, never!" He would never be able to bear a child with another woman. He couldn't do it! He wished so badly to have a child with Rose. If only Rose were pregnant back then! He would then have a reason not to divorce her.

As long as they remained together, the misunderstandings that laid between them would surely get resolved eventually.

Sebastian wouldn't stand a chance to cbetween them.

He hoped so hard that Rose would becpregnant, but his hopes had been in vain.

Nothing would be left of him, Theodore Spencer, in this world after his death.

His heart was filled with hopelessness, like a lone boat adrift in the vast ocean plagued with storms.

He withstood all the agony that life had to offer as he drifted in a sea of hopelessness. Every breath he took was a reminder that his life was ebbing away.

For countless nights, he felt suffocated opening his eyes staring at the ceiling, feeling as though he won't open his eyes again the next day.

Yet, he always did. He always managed to see the sunlight of a new day.

The thing he hated most right now was opening his eyes every morning.

Why did he have to wake up? "Theo, tell me. Are you deliberately torturing yourself? Are you tired of living?" Theodore remained silent.

Sydney took a deep breath. "You've escaped death so many times. Don't you think the heavens are giving you apother chance? The heavens want you alive. Think about it. You were actually rescued by a burglar when you almost died all alone last night." Last night, Theodore was on the verge of death.

A burglar snuck into his house with the intention of stealing something valuable, but he was shocked to see Theodore almost dying and quickly called for an ambulance.

That was what the police told Theodore. They even said that the burglar was nabbed. Although he did steal something, he was given a N lighter sentence as he had saved Theodore. Theodore laughed when he first heard about it from the police.

The heavens clearly wanted him to suffer in this life, playing such a perverted and cruel gwith him so that he had to continue living in this pain.

Everything that was happening right now was a cruel punishment for him, punishing him for not knowing his heart and divorcing his beloved woman. Punishing him for being a foolish bastard. This was probably retribution.
