“Tobias!”
Queena rushed into the house, grabbing Tobias by the arm and pulling him outside in a hurry.
“What are you doing at my place?”
Tobias' gaze couldn't help but fall on the man lying in the bed.
The man was in bad shape, looking worse off than the heartthrob back at his own place, but he was strikingly handseven just
lying there. Tobias couldn't help but wonder what he'd look like with his eyes open.
“Queena, who's this guy?”
He hadn’t seen Queena in five years. When he was six, she went abroad for her studies, the only one from the village to do so, and
not just for any degree, but for a master’s - she was the pride of the village.
“He’s a friend, Tobias. You can’t tell anyone he's here, okay? It's our little secret.”
Tobias nodded, “Got it. Is he your boyfriend or something?”
A hint of blush crept onto Queena’s face, “It's complicated.”
Tobias burst into a grin, “Aha, you've got the hots for him! Don’t worry, my lips are sealed.”
“But what did you chere for?”
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇt“The good-looking guy at my place is in trouble; his wound reopened. You gotta ccheck it out.”
Queena nudged him out the door, “Alright, just wait outside for a sec, I'll be right there.”
She closed the door behind her and returned to the inner room.
A small window was the only source of light, but it let in enough sunshine to reveal the man’s features clearly.
Anyone else might recognize him - it was lan.
Queena checked his forehead for fever.
The fever had broken, and she breathed a sigh of relief.
Then she found herself staring at his face, lost in thought. Bringing him here had been a harrowing journey.
First a helicopter ride, then a smuggler's boat, followed by a dinghy to her hometown.
The moment his face appeared on the research facility's screen, she was smitten.
She had watched him, hidden in the shadows, as he sparred with Experiment No. 8.
When the earthquake struck, she instinctively grabbed his hand without a second thought.
He didn’t know who she was and froze, but there was no tto push her away.
The landslide swept them far away; she was lucky to escape unscathed, but he lay close by, severely injured.
In the ensuing chaos, she commandeered a helicopter and flew him to safety.
The place was swarming with people that day, so crowded that nobody noticed her escape.
Five years ago, she joined the research facility as a researcher, conducting numerous experiments on human subjects.
Now, even without her equipment or medication, her medical skills were exceptional, and she was certain she could make him fall
for her.
When he woke up, they would live a peaceful life together in the village.
The thought excited Queena, a smile curling on her lips.
Tobias' voice cfrom outside, more urgent this time.
“Queena, you ready yet?”
She covered lan with a blanket, “Coming!”
She followed Tobias down the path to his house.
Abner was awake, his face a pale shade.
“Handsome, this is Queena. Don't worry, she’s brilliant, studied abroad and everything.”
Queena was already examining Abner’s wound, her voice soft.
“Tobias, drop the study abroad talk, will ya?”
Tobias scratched his head, grinning ear to ear, “Heh, it’s true though. Queena’s the best in this village.”
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmAbner didn’t seem to notice Queena, his eyes shut as she tended to his wound.
After a few minutes, Queena spoke up.
“The stitches are intact, it's just a bit of bleeding. I'll disinfect it again. Be careful walking around for the next couple of weeks,
nothing too strenuous.”
Abner leaned against the bedpost, his eyes on Queena’s hands.
“You're the village doctor?”
“Yeah.”
A doctor with calluses that heavy on her hands?
And those were clearly the calluses of someone who wielded a weapon.
