I don't know how much thad passed before a nurse from the operating room cout calling names.
"Is Jessica's husband here?"
Ryan walked up in big strides. "Doctor! I'm here."
Those four words pierced my heart like daggers. The pain causedto find it difficult to breathe.
All the waiting throughout the day and the decision I had finally made beca joke at this moment. Standing
there madefeel like | was a clown.
We weren't divorced just yet.
My husband had already becsomeone else's husband.
Not far away, he asked desperately, "How is she? Is it serious?"
"She lost a lot of blood, what do you think? But fortunately, you brought her to the hospital in time, she's fine
now." After a short pause, the nurse added as if to reassure him, "The child is fine too."
‘Child?

‘Jessica is pregnant?"
'They have a child now?"
| couldn't breathe and looked awkwardly at Ryan.
He breathed a sigh of relief, his face finally softened a little. "That's good."
Maybe my gaze was too obvious, or perhaps he finally noticed that someone was looking at him, as he finished
speaking, he turned his head slightly in my direction.
Almost simultaneously, | turned and slipped into the fire escape.
| collapsed against the wall, my body crumbling, the scene from earlier began replaying in my mind.
| laughed uncontrollably, as if | were crazy, and as | laughed, a bitter taste filled my mouth.
'How foolish have | been? Charlotte, he already has a child with someone else. Maybe he only moved because of
his grandfather's pressure, and you, in wishful thinking, held onto hope for him. You are truly starved for love," |
thought.
Maybe it was tforto let go. | took out my phone to send him a message, but his call cthrough just as
| was about to send the message.
His voice was calm. "Hey, Charlotte, are you at home?
"Yeah." | sniffed, trying to hold back the tears as | asked, "What's wrong?"
"Really?"
"Why would | lie to you?" | casually said. "By the way, have you seen anyone who looks a lot like me?"
This time, | wanted to get clear answers, to understand.

"No." He chose to lie.
But | pressed on. "Where are you? Is everything not taken care of yet?"
"..." He hesitated for a moment, only choosing to answer the second question. "Not yet, | can't chome
tonight. Make sure you get a good night's rest."
I chuckled, "Is it a business matter?"
There was a moment of silence at the other end of the line, then he answered calmly, "I'll cback after
I finish."
He was still lying.

| took a silent breath. "When? What about tomorrow's concert? Are you still going?"
"I'll go." This time, he didn't beat around the bush and gave a definite answer.
| looked up at the ceiling, letting tears stream down my face. "Okay, I'll wait for you."
'This is the last tthat I'll wait for you,' | thought.
When | left the hospital, it was already dark.
After several rains, the night wind blew like needles through my bones.
| was wearing only a thin dress, but | didn't feel the cold at all. Perhaps it was because my heart had gone cold.
"Ouch!"
Someone ran intohead-on and sentflying into the hospital.
| gasped softly as | was sent backwards. | didn't know what | stepped on, but I slipped. Just when | was about to
fall over, someone caught me. Instinctively, | thought it was Ryan.
But when | looked up, | was disappointed and surprised, | steadied myself quickly, smiling as | asked, " Jack, what
are you doing here?"
It was Jack, whom | hadn't seen in a while.
