Chapter 92
Chapter 92. Gatekeeper
After walking along the highway for a while, we eventually arrived at the front of the city gate.
There were people lined up, waiting for the checkpoint inspection.
The gatekeeper would exchange words with each person attempting to pass the gate before granting them passage.
After the gatekeeper checked a few people, it was our turn.
“You seem like adventurers, but I don’t recognize your faces. And that black hair of yours, have you traveled from afar?”
The gatekeeper asked me this question at the beginning of our encounter.
I spoke according to the plan I had in mind.
“Before we knew it, we were on top of the hill where we could see this city, but we have no memories before that. So, for now, we thought of coming to this city to see what it’s like.”
I said that while pointing to the hill where we had initially stood. As I said, I couldn’t help but feel that the setting was a bit far-fetched, but the truth was, I couldn’t think of a better idea.
The gatekeeper furrowed his brow.
“So, you have amnesia, and you’re adventurers with the [Translation] skill… I can’t make that judgment alone. Sorry, but could you step aside and wait for a moment? Hey, can you come over and help me?”
The gatekeeper called out to a nearby shack, and after a while, another man appeared from inside the shack.
That man took over our interaction.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtWe followed his instructions while mentally preparing ourselves to escape at any moment.
We answered several questions truthfully, except for matters concerning our original world.
The man was generally kind in his responses, but he seemed to doubt whether we were dangerous individuals.
I tried to emphasize our harmlessness as politely and reasonably as possible.
After a while, the conversation concluded.
They told us we could pass through the gate if we met certain conditions.
And those conditions were.
“An entrance tax… is it?”
“Yeah, it’s one silver coin per person. It’s something that not only you people need to pay. But anyone from outside must pay to enter this city.”
“We probably don’t have any money… Is there anything else we can offer as payment, like goods or labor?”
“I see. As adventurers, don’t you have items like HP potions? Two HP potions for the entrance tax for all three of you would be enough.”
“HP Potions, huh? Kazane-san, I think there were two of them in the [Item Box].”
“Yeah, I’ll bring them out now… [Item Box]!”
Kazane-san summons the [Item Box] and takes two HP Potions.
By the way, no one seems particularly surprised by the appearance of the [Item Box].
After Kazane-san hands over the HP Potions, the man carefully examines them and mutters.
“I used [Item Appraisal], and they certainly seem to be HP Potions. Alright, you may pass.”
“””Thank you very much.”””
We express our gratitude to the man and proceed through the city gate.
We managed to make it.
I let out a sigh of relief.
But in the next moment.
Just as we stepped into the city through the gate, we heard a “ping” sound.
At the same time, a Message Box appeared in our field of view.
It was a semi-transparent board, similar to when I opened the status screen, and it displayed the following message:
───────────────────────
Mission: Reached a city with a population of over 3,000 people!
Each party member earns 1,000 experience points!
New Mission: Reach a city with a population of over 10,000 people!

Oh… So this is a mission.
There are still many strange things, but I feel like I understand the atmosphere to some extent.
Upon checking the Limit Break Event Guide booklet again, I see a stamp-like mark indicating the completion of the mission to reach a city with a population of over 3,000 people, and a new mission has been added:
───────────────────────
Mission: Reach a city with a population of over 10,000 people… Reward: 3,000 experience points
───────────────────────
Aside it’s added a stamp rally in the mission.
I’ll leave that aside for now.
I had a feeling that this book would naturally have new entries written.
It feels like a grand bargain sale of fantasy phenomena.
Well, leaving that aside…
We finally made it into the city.
The three of us proceed straight down the main street.
Our destination is the Adventurer’s Guild.
