Chapter 1403

Hylda froze and immediately tried to flee. But it was too late. One of the police officers tackled her to the ground

and put her in handcuffs. Her face was drained of color. Hylda realized that her time was up and did not resist the

arrest.

As the police escorted her away, she stole a glance toward the corner where Ian stood. He looked expressionless.

Suddenly, it all made sense to her, and she began to curse.

Humans are selfish creatures. Hylda was at the end of her road and could no longer turn things around. 'I guess our

ten- year relationship meant nothing to him. I used all my connections and means to get him married to Irene, yet

this is how he repays me. Though, I can't blame him. He is now a part of the Moore family. Why would he want to

derail his own life for me?'

As Hylda was taken into custody, news of the suitcase murder case's perpetrator being caught spread like wildfire.

The city, once fraught with anxiety and restlessness due to the case, became peaceful again.

Hylda readily admitted to killing Walter. When questioned about the reason for her actions, she remained

remarkably composed, stating that she wanted to see her husband and make arrangements for her children.

'Walter was the one who was extorting and threatening me. Moreover, he had a knife at the time. As long as Albert

makes into finding a skilled lawyer for me, I could at least argue that it was self-defense,' she thought.

However, Hylda's illusions were shattered by the police when they told her that someone had reported her

involvement in Rainee's car crash. When they questioned Albert, he claimed she was the mastermind behind the

whole thing. He removed himself from the picture, insisting that Hylda was consumed by jealousy and plotted the

accident.

Hylda could not believe her ears. Suddenly, she burst into laughter that sounded crazed. It got louder and louder as

her eyes filled with tears. Albert had fended himself in the face of disaster. He showed no trace of affection and

abandoned her without a second thought.

For over two decades, Hylda had kept her head down and obeyed Albert's every command. She could not accept

that this was the end. 'Why the hell did I ever fall for Albert?' She thought.

Hylda was in her prime back then. She had just come out of her remote, impoverished hometown. Even though she

attended a relatively unheard medical school, she always held her head high. She aspired to change her destiny

through her college entrance exam, where she could enter an Ivy League school and get a good job.

With Rainee's support, she could focus on her studies without being burdened by life's hardships. She was just a

step away from getting into college when Albert came along. He tricked her into having sex with him and got her

pregnant. He robbed her of the one chance she had to

change her future. She was blinded by a web of lies.

To turn her dreams into reality, Hylda endured humiliation and went as far as to harm her benefactor. In the end,

she was blamed for Rainee's murder.

Hylda had placed her hopes in the wrong person from the very beginning. She recalled what Rainee had said when

she supported her financially all those years ago. She had warned her not to rely on anyone else but herself. "Only

when you become strong can you face this world fearlessly," said Rainee at the time.

Hylda did not take her seriously. She assumed it was easy for someone who had not experienced the hardships of

life to say that.

'Unlike her, I come from a poor family with nothing to my name. How am I supposed to climb the social ladder by

myself? How long would it take for me to succeed in this world? Rainee doesn't know what she's talking about. She

wouldn't have accumulated such wealth without her wealthy parents,' thought Hylda.
