Chapter 70 Chapter 70 James' words stayed with him well into the week. They stayed with him every the considered messaging Katrina. They stayed with him any the thought about her. About their right together. About their journey together The Temporary secretary was a fairly competent intern, but Kylan couldn't store away the anger each morning when it was him sitting in Katrina's chair at his desk, and not the woman herself How was she? Was she doing okay? How was her father? Did she miss Kylan He shouldn't want her to miss him.
By Friday, Kylan's anxiety was reaching a peak. The anniversary was coming up swiftly and it had been nearly a week since he had seen or Katrina en or spoken to He found himself eating the sour candy she had given him to keep on his desk, both hating the taste and also grateful for the small reminder of her. He also toyed with his red and black bracelet while he worked at his desk, frowning at the fraying edges of the cheap material.
He was nearly done for the day, having already sent that secretary home. He glanced up when there was a knock on his door.
"Is your staff okay. Kylan Ryan asked, taking a seat in Katrina's chair.
Kylan rolled his eyes and sighed, stuffing the bracelet in the top drawer of his desk. "Oscar will be out of commission for a week. Katrina is returning on Monday," he responded defily.
Ryan nodded in understanding, clasping his hands over his stomach, his elbows resting on either side of the chair.
"How are things with h Katrina, Kylan?" he asked nonchalantly.
Kylan's shoulders deflated a minuscule amount. Did he want to be honest with his friend? With his mentor? Could he be "I We... It's complicated." Kylan forced it out of his mouth.

"It was my fault. 1. Crossed a line. A line I wasn't ready to cross, and that it wasn't. Right to cross." That was half the truth. It had felt right, sleeping with Katrina. It had felt more right than anything he had ever experienced in his life. And that was precisely why it couldn't continue. "What sort of line did you cross? Was it the kind you can step back from, or the kind that's irreversible!" Ryan asked calmly Kylan scowled down at his desk; his hands clasped underneath his chin. He thought about Katrina. About her on the bed under him. He thought about being inside her, being one with her. "Irrevocable." He mumbled.
"Ahh, I see. I can only imagine the confusion crossing a line of that.. nature must bring Ryan knew what he meant, of course, he did. He always knew, even when Kylan couldn't or wouldn't give more details. It had something to do with Ryan being a former cop, he was certain of it "F*cking hell, Ryan. Listen, I'll handle it. I have no idea how, but I'll try. You don't need to worry about the f*cking company, okay?" Kylan snapped This friend "I'm not worried about the company, Kylan. I'm worried about you. You have the anniversary coming up. Oscar is absent, and your relationship with Katrina hangs in the balance. Tell me, friend, who is taking care of you? Are you taking care of yourself? I urge you to call the number of the thera-" Kylan's silent glare caused Ryan to sigh and close his mouth. "You'll never accept my offer, I understand that, but I'm a friend. I'm here if you need a shoulder to lean on, figuratively of course." He shifted and stood, clapping his hands together. "Go get ssleep, Kylan. You look positively ghostly He smiled down at Kylan and then left the room, having long since learned that his presence was no longer helping.
Kyllan pulled his bracelet back out of his drawer, sinking down into his chair and fiddling with a million and one thoughts barreling through his mind.
From the outside though, he would only look grumpy. Mildly put off and pale, as Ryan pointed out to him It was a blessing and a curse, his ability to turn off his outward emotions when inside. Inside, the ghouls and the demons were celebrating again.
Kylan's temporary driver. Bryan, drove him to work an hour early on Monday, per his request. He hadn't slept much over the weekend, his mind in a state of near panic constantly.
He was ready to see Katrina. He was ready to look at her face, her eyes. He needed to see her eyes, especially. He made his own tea that morning, going as far as making Katrina a cup as well.
Chapter 70 By the teight o'clock rolled around, he was waiting behind his desk, his knee bouncing nervously where i no one would be able to see.
The knock on his door caused him to nearly jump out of his seat. His gaze snapped up, and he found Katrina standing in his doorway.
She looked breathtaking. Her hair cascaded in curls, her sweater dress hugged her perfectly, and her red lipstick looked enticing. She was a picture of perfection and Kylan's heart positively sang at the sight of her alone "Katrina "he breathed, mildly embarrassed by how relieved he sounded.
"May I speak with you, Sir? Before we go over the schedule. Katrina's voice was Different. Carded Professional Kylan took note of a manila folder closed around Katrina's hands What is it, Katrina?" he asked slowly She cto sit in front of his desk like she always did. "Here." She handed him the folder, taking care not to jostle either of the teacups.
Kylan took the folder, not really breathing. He opened it and pulled out the papers within, bound together by a singular, black clip. His heart fell through every Boor of Ross Corporation headquarters beneath them when he realized what they were.
"I'm resigning. Sir. Effective the second week of the new year. I've gone over all of it with Max. I want to give you substantial tto find my replacement Of course. I'm happy to help train anyone you might deem acceptable. As far as the contract goes, well, seeing how we broke a rather large rule, it's null and void in my eyes. Wouldn't you say so. Sir?" Her voice was calculated. Cautious. It sounded like she had rehearsed this sspeech countless times before walking into Rylan's office.
Kylan stared at the papers on his desk, his mind entirely blank apart from panic. Sheer panic. Panic and regret. "I don't want any more of your money either, Sir. I haven't for a while now, if I'm honest. I want to thank you for the opportunity of working here and learn from you. It'll all be a fantastic experience to take with me, going forward in my career. Katrina continued. "Sir, are you listening to me?" Kylan's eyes shifted to Katrina's, and he frowned. They were still guarded. So guarded. He missed their warmth, though he didn't deserve to see it. His heart begged for him to call out to her, to tell her everything. To apologize. To grovel. To f*cking fall to his knees in front of her But his mind wouldn't let him.
Everyone leaves.
Everyone goes He had brought this on himself, and he knew it. He knew he didn't deserve to beg for her time, her energy, her love "I can write you a letter of recommendation. We'll start looking for a replacement after Christmas in a week," Rylan's voice sounded choked, but there was nothing he could quite do to fix it right now.
"Right. Thank you, Sir Katrina cleared her throat, straightening out her shoulders. "Where is Oscar, sir? A man named Bryan pickedup this Bemorning If it were possible. Kylan's heart deflated more. She still didn't know about Oscar. He told his driver he wouldn't divulge any information to her. And now, now Katrina was well and truly done with Kylan. He had driven her away.
"I think you should reach out to him yourself, Katrina. He's been wanting to talk to you," Kylan told her, fighting to keep his voice as neutral as possible.

He wanted to ask her what was going on inside her mind and if there was more that she wasn't saying James and Oscar's words echoed through his mind She's clearly smitten with you. Kylan,
Perhaps she had been. Perhaps she had felt something for him. But now! Now. The woman Kylan had cto know, to really know. The empathetic, the passionate, the loving woman he had allowed himself to Pck over one too many f*cking times. She was buried away. Locked away for others to experience, but not him any longer He deserved it. Of course, he did. He had done this to himself. To her.
But fuck, if he didn't hate himself a little bit more.
He wanted to beg for her forgiveness and love, but who was he to want that? He was a monster. The shackles around his wrists, his ankles, and his neck, all tightened and thrust him into his new reality.
3:00 PM Chapter 70 She was too good for him. She always had been.
"You have a meeting with Mr. Hughes at ten o'clock, followed by a lunch meeting with someone who claims they have ar a new camera design. Kylan watched her talk and listened to her words only barely. He could feel himself slipping, retreating further behind the walls in his mind.
The woman in front of him had cared for him. And fuck, he cared for her. He knew he always would.
And now. Now, he knew she was falling away from him, and he only had himself to blame.
She sat in the chair in front of his desk, but it felt like she was already gone.
