Chapter One Hundred and Forty Eight
| walked into the healing room with a tray of food. | set it down on the table.
“How are you feeling?” | asked Balley.
She didn’t look any better than she had been a day ago; her face was still scarred; she looked like she had been
through crap and that she had been.
“They fixed up the bones that had been broken, stitched the wounds, and cleaned them up. that is the best they
could do,” Bailey responded after a few moments of silence.
“I'm... I'm so sorry for what happened to you.
“Are you truly sorry? | mean, this must be what you have wanted all this time, right?”
“No, | would never wish this-not even on my enemy.”
“Bullshit,” she says, and | had been about to retort but decided against it.
“Those injuries-would they ever heal?” | questioned.
“The injuries would heal after a few days, albeit they would leave nasty scars, but nothing | can’t take; the
missing fingers would regrow after a few months, but the burn,” she says referring to the burn on her face. “This
was inflicted by magic.”
“Does that mean It will never heal?” | questioned.
“It would take a longer tfor that to clear off-maybe a few years.”
| couldn’t imagine the pain she felt now.

| sat on the bed beside her. “I wanted to tell you, thank you, thank you for trying to help this pack.”
“You thank me, even if | failed.”
“You made an attempt; that is better than nothing.”
“Just so you know, everything | did, every move | made was for me-not for this pack; | knew a twould come
when Nyaos would want his revenge onfor my betrayal-I thought |
could catch him unaware, but they are more powerful than they ever had been.
| should have suspected it from the wind; Nyaos could never create a wind so strong in the past, and Caleb... his
abilities are even beyond my comprehension. | hadn't been ready,” she admitted.
“I don’t care why you did it, Bailey; | have to give it to you, you are really brave.”
Her gaze met mine. “Don’t look atlike that,” she said, as if disgusted.
“Like how?” | questioned, slightly offended by her tone. What was her problem?

“That look of pity, | hate it.”
“Then I'm sorry,” | said, looking away.
“You've asked your question, and now it’s tto ask mine. Why did you help me?” She asked, sitting up
slightly, while she tried to hide it. | knew the little movement caused her even more discomfort.
“What do you mean?”
“I do not like repeating myself; you know what 1 bean. | went to bed with your mate’” | didn’t miss her emphasis
on the word ‘mate”. “You were mad at me; | knew it; | know you hate me. So what | am asking is why you came
back for me
She was right to ask that question, but | couldn't let her know what | had felt when | saw her injured as she was
and mostly naked out in the woods.
“Maybe you should answer my question first. When | had gone to get help for you, | noticed
died you left the spot. Were you trying to escape or what? We both know that you would have if not attended to
as quickly as possible.”
“l judged you by what | would do if |
was kept in your position; | didnt,
