Chapter 394 Chapter 2 - Vicious cycle
They both sat in silence for a while. Not wanting to be so glum Skyy started a small chat with Kyle. "Shall we head to the library? I heard they had new books incoming,"
Kyle rolled his eyes. "What is the use of reading? We can't use that knowledge anyways."
"Come on, some books are actually interesting." he nudged his friend up the ground and they both headed to the only public library in the lunar base.
It was a huge white hall with rows of books stacked on the shelves. Nothing special but this was the only form of entertainment for him. They did have a few mind games and music available here. but books… nothing could beat them.
Skyy beelined to the shelves of the new stack of books with a huge grin on his face. "So many new ones… Kyle look, look," he excitedly slapped his shoulders.
Kyle coldly glanced at them. "Boring,"
"Come on, it's fun. Look they even have a collection of s," he cheerfully pulled out the huge book. It was hard-covered and weighed a few kilos. He carefully hugged it close to his body.
He went ham in the new section. They had so many books that he did not know which one to choose.
They were only allowed to take three books to their room. And they were only allowed out of the room every 27 days, excluding the maintenance days. So, he had to choose the best book that could distract him and entertain him for a few days.
Kyle who was standing close started to move towards the music section. He curiously looked at the old album selection. The music was at least a few hundred years old. they had been unearthed so recently and the copies were made available for everyone.
"Find anything you like?" he curiously ran up to him.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtKyle shook his head. "These things are older than us… who would be interested in them," he mumbled casting a longing look at them.
Rolling his eyes sky picked out a few he thought looked interesting. "Here take it with you. don't be so shy. If you want something you have to take initiative," saying so he ran back to the new stack of books.
Suddenly a smaller book caught his attention. It was a slightly worn-out black bound book. The cover looked like it was made up of leather. it did not even have a title printed on its cover.
Frowning, he pulled it out. usually, books had to go through the guards to even arrive in the library. This was made so they don't get access to anything inappropriate.
It was impossible for them to add such an old book to the library.
"pw54 come on!" Kyle shouted from the distance.
Sky hurriedly hugged the book to his embrace and ran up to him. "it's time for lunch already?!"
"No… look," Kyle pointed to outside the library. This room was made up of glass walls so they were able to see the people outside.
One of the young pregnant men was being rolled out in a stretcher. the young man actually had a cheerful smile on his face.
Skyy frowned. 'doesn't he know his child is going to be taken?" he nudged Kyle.
"He knows. I heard he managed to seduce a powerful ability user. That guy even promised to set him free. He thinks This baby is the key to his freedom," Kyle scoffed disdainfully. "He is delusional."
"Maybe… maybe it can be true," Skyy peered at the young pregnant man.
A hand suddenly slapped his back. "Snap out of it. freedom is just a delusional thought. We.... we were made to be breeding cattle. Nothing can change that,"
Sky felt his heart drop at that thought. How could he forget?
They were nothing but breeding machines for the power users to use and abuse. This base… it was a confinement. They were kept here until they were chosen to mate with a powerful ability user. If they got pregnant well and good. if they didn't, they were matched with as many power users as they could until they were with a child.
The nightmare didn't end after that.
Pregnancy was just the first step. After giving birth they were only given six months to rest before they were matched again.
The vicious cycle continued… until they were dead.
Only a lucky few got to get out of here. only a powerful ability user who had great influence can bring them out of this vicious cycle. However, there are not many powerful ability users. It was said that there were only fifty or so on earth. For powerful users, they found it hard to procreate. Only a strong prototype woman can be impregnated by them.
It was likely that this young man caught the attention of a powerful man.
Skyy sighed. Freedom that is attained at this cost is never true freedom. The ones who left the lunar base were made to stay at home and never leave. They are still under the control of those men. it's just like trading one cage for another fancier cage.
People who wanted that kind of fate were delusional.
Sky leaned against Kyle. "What are we going to do…"
"As days pass, I'm feeling like giving up," Kyle mumbled softly.
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmSkyy sat up straight. "d-don't talk like that,"
"What do we have to live for? I don't want to live like a hooker," Kyle mumbled with a downcast look.
Skyy cautiously looked at him. "what's a hooker?"
"a person who sleeps around." Kye chuckled pinching his cheeks. "Why are you so innocent?"
"Tsk," Skyy pushed his offending hand away. "Kyle…. I only have you. don't give up. not until I give up. then we shall both leave. please don't leave me alone…" he whispered softly.
In this cruel world, he only had one person, his friend, his family, his Kyle. They met when they were both ten and clicked it off. the slightly rugged and kind Kyle became his whole life. he became something that he anticipated every morning he woke up.
He did not want that to end. Then he would lose his purpose to live.
Skyy gazed at the heavy books in his arms. The map book he had picked up had a huge image of Earth printed on it. his fingers gently touched it. 'Sky…'
They did not have names. Only code names. He was PW54 until he met Kyle. He was the one who gave him the name Skyy.
[' because your eyes are like the sky,"] he mumbled ever so softly.
Skyy gazed at him. "Kyle…promise me… promise me you won't give up."
"Hmm don't worry. I'm not that weak. …." He smiled softly.
Kyle never made that promise
