Chapter 379: Why must we go to war?

“Why must we go to war?” Treeda questioned.

Chuckling, Lord Draco shrugged in response, “Of course, we’re going to war. You all understand the true value of magicite. What other option is there?”

“Well, by discussing it with Representative Slazza,” Inka added, “we may find another solution.”

“If you don’t want war, then that’s all the better for me. That’ll make the mining experience far easier on the locals, letting than focus on the task without worry,” remarked Isaac.

Treeda raised an eyebrow in question, “Are you suggesting we just let you take it all?”

“If you’re not declaring war, then that’s how it will go.”

“Hmm... Why are you so deadset on waging war?” Treeda looked at Vloz while asking, “There are many reasons for you to not want war. Do you think the quadrant would prefer war break out? Are you not in possession of a true candidate from this very territory? Isn’t this territory beginning to grow, and it houses a clan with the potential to bring you massive long-term benefits?”

.....

Shrugging again, Isaac stated, “The Iron-body Gorillas do have some reputation, but they’re merely a perennial clan. At best, they don’t even have a divine bloodline. Sure, there was a mortal champion among them not long ago, and that champion’s family is now living here. However, that great ape is no longer alive. He can no longer bear that honor in the name of my territory. A dead champion of the past is only that. Dead. And only valuable in memory.

“Perhaps if his son was still alive, I would show a little more favoritism...” sighed Lord Draco. “But that’s no longer the case. The territory was founded after the former champion’s glorious death, and I learned of the territory’s growth after the death of the former champion’s child. Sadly, fate wasn’t on the side of the gorillas. So, until they can prove themselves again, why should I show them favoritism over the many divine clans under my jurisdiction?

“And no, I do not possess a true candidate!”

As Isaac concluded his speech, Inka and Treeda both shook their heads. They glanced at each other and then looked at Bradok. Lady Inka spoke, “Since the day is winding down, perhaps it’s best we get accommodated for the night, before the feast.”

“Yes!” Isaac’s laugh boomed through the air. “Let’s get ready to feast! And be sure to prepare my lodging properly!”

Smiling, Bradok bowed to his prefecture lord. “Of course, my lord. We’ll prepare your quarters immediately. Please, follow me.”

Bradok and Vloz led the group of dignitaries, clearing the streets as they advanced. Wandering eyes fell on the group but Vloz’s respectful yet chilling gaze was enough to keep the gathering crowds from saying anything or from asking questions.

“I look forward to your announcement of our arrival,” Isaac stated, not even sparing Bradok or the crowds a glance.

Bowing his head, the gorilla leader replied, “Of course, my lord. Tomorrow morning, we’ll prepare a proper announcement for you all, one worthy of your stature and position.”

“Ha, I doubt you have the resources for such a welcome. Which makes my anticipation all the greater.”

“You don’t need to welcome me or announce my presence to the city.” Everyone in the group was caught off guard by Treeda’s statement. But she continued, “Leader Bradok, please, don’t mention me tomorrow in the announcement. I’d prefer to use this time to relax, as it’s rare that I’m able to leave my station without worry or stress.”

“Impossible.” Isaac chortled, “You just don’t want to cozy up to the locals and then declare war on them.”

Not looking at Lord Draco, Treeda repeated, “Either way, please do not announce my arrival or presence here in town. Just as Zelsh was able to casually interact with the budding city, I wish to do the same.”

“Very well, Lord Treeda,” Bradok agreed with a bow and a grin.

“And what about you, Lady Inka? Are you wanting to remain secretive as well?” asked Isaac.

“I don’t mind either way. But since Treeda feels such a way, I’ll ask the same.” Inka reasoned, shaking her head, “For someone as grand as Lord Treeda to not be announced, how can I, a mere stand-in lord, receive special treatment?”

“Very well, I won’t force you to do so. But I’m this territory’s lord. It’s time the people understood who their true master is,” said Isaac, getting Vloz to raise his eyebrow in thought without being noticed.

Soon, the conversation died down and the group reached their destination.

Bradok spoke up as the gorilla guards opened the estate gates, “We, the Iron-body Gorilla Clan graciously accept your presence in our estate. Lord Draco, we’ve cleared and prepared our largest home for you during our stay, my family’s home.”

“Ahh, there’s nothing more respectful than offering your own home when there’s nothing better to present...” Isaac sighed with a hint of praise.

Moving on, Bradok bowed to Treeda and Inka. “For you, Lord Treeda, and for you, Lady Inka, we’ve prepared our second largest homes. And please, forgive us for being unable to better accommodate you during your visit. Sadly, we’re but a young territory, and far from being able to supply the luxury you three lords deserve.”

Answering for the three of them, Lord Draco nodded, “Since you can clearly understand the difference in our statuses, we’ll forgive you for the lack of true hospitality. By my next visit, I expect that to have changed...”

“Yes, my lord,” answered Bradok. “It will be as you’ve asked.”

“Good. Now, take me to my home. I’ll be resting until the feast. After so much interprefectural travel, some rest will do me well,” stated Isaac, looking to Bradok for a personal escort.

Bradok understood and dismissed himself. “Lord Treeda, Lady Inka, I’ll be showing Lord Draco to his temporary estate. Vloz will happily lead you to your temporary estates as well. Once the meal is ready, we’ll send word for you.”
