“I loved it.” She replied with a light smile. “It’s just too expensive for me to wear while working.”
Her answers were always delivered in the same manner.
Stiff, calculated, and reasonable.
After delivering her report, the executive secretary, Joyce, entered the office. She was there to share
Bowen’s schedule for the day.
“There’s a lunch meeting with Garma Company at noon, and you have another meeting at the
convention center later in the afternoon. You don’t have any official events to attend tonight, but there is
a family dinner.”
The executive secretary’s voice got lower and lower as she neared the end of her words. She couldn’t
help but steal a glance to the side where Jolene stood.
This family dinner was to celebrate the engagement between the Evert family and Gellar family.
It wasn’t supposed to be a big event, though. It was just for the families to get together and share a
meal. When the day.

of the wedding arrived, that was when they’d go all out.
This was what Bowen’s mother had planned.
The Earth Group already knew about the relationship between Jolene and Bowen.

But fate had other plans.
Those who knew and were close to Jolene felt bad for her.
As the executive secretary spoke with Bowen, she had remained where she stood, the contract still
tucked under her arm.
Her face had paled, but it was difficult to figure out what she was thinking. Was she happy? Sad?
All that could be seen was a shallow dimple at the corner of her lips.
Bowen hummed quietly in response and said, “I know.”
As she exited the office, Joyce quickly approached Jolene.

“Oh, Miss Marsh, Mrs. Evert has personally requested for you to attend the dinner as well.”
Jolene froze for a moment before readjusting her expression to remain normal.
“Okay, thank you,” she responded curtly.
Joyce opened her mouth, wanting to add something. However, when she saw the calm look on
Jolene’s face, she decided to remain quiet.
If the people who were directly involved in this were so unbothered, why were those on the sidelines so
anxious?
Jolene knew exactly why Mrs. Evert wanted her there tonight.
Ever since her existence was made known, Mrs. Evert had refused to let her out of her sight.
She was also more than aware of the huge gap between her and Bowen.
They came from worlds that were as different as heaven and hell.
So, despite being in love with Bowen, she had never

expressed it out loud–not even once over the past three
years.
To maintain her facade, she’d even ask Bowen for money and new bags the next morning.
It’d make it seem like she and Bowen were in on a deal.
She was in for the money, him for the sex.
A fair exchange.
That afternoon, Jolene asked to leave an hour early.
Bowen didn’t bother to ask her why and simply granted her request.
Once she got home, she quickly showered and got dressed. She decided to change into a light blue
dress.
It was just the right amount of being inconspicuous yet elegant.
She knew her place among thein.
When it came to choosing her accessories, she allowed her fingers to gently glide over her collection of
expensive
jewelry.

At last, she decided on a matching set that her best friend, Nicole Berry, had given for her twentieth
birthday.
It was made of silver and clearly wasn’t worth much.
But it was a safe choice to wear.
At least it looked like something she could afford.
The dinner was being held at one of the Evert family’s many hotels. Jolene had visited this one once.
She remembered their French cuisine being exceptionally good.
After she arrived, it wasn’t long before Bowen pulled up.
He strode in through the door right as she was serving everyone a cup of tea.
As soon as he entered, he spotted her.
He took in her light blue dress and its simple cut. The only decoration was an elegant ruffle across her
chest.
The color suited her, brightening her complexion and making her skin look as smooth as marble.
A silver necklace adorned her pale neck. Its pendant was of a
small figure that swung slightly with every movement.
Bowen’s mother, Mrs. Evert, had claimed the front seat for herself. A smile lit up her face as she waved
to her son. “Bowen, come here. Viona just arrived, and we’ve been waiting for you for a while.”
Viona stood up and also smiled. She spoke up in a soft voice, “Not for too long. I’ve only just arrived
too.”
“Bowen, come and sit next to her.”
