Chapter 36

"It seems like you've lost weight over the past few days," Tamara pointed out. She felt that Lily, who had always

been slim, now had a sharper chin from the weight she had lost. "You should eat more and nourish your body."

After saying that, she picked up sfood from the dishes and placed it on Lily's plate.

Lily lowered her head slightly while feeling honored. Yet, before she could thank Tamara, a soft snort cfrom

beside her. She turned her head to sternly stare at Xavier. Xavier's side profile alone showed the perfect

definition of a sarcastic expression. However, it vanished almost immediately. The change was so fast that Lily

thought she was mistaken. "You must be exhausted from work, Mom. You should eat more." Xavier emphasized

the words "exhausted from work" as he placed sfood on Tamara's plate. Then, he said, "Let's have Sarah

handle the upcoming project."

Just like that, he swiftly changed the conversation from something casual to work. He always discussed work-

related matters whenever he was around Tamara. That was the norm.

Lily's chest tightened at the sudden mention of Sarah. She couldn't help but over-analyze the meaning of "you

must be exhausted from work." It was as if Xavier was saying Lily, a woman with no job and nothing to do all

day, didn't deserve to eat.

Those interpretations were pretty mild, especially after considering Xavier's expression and tone when he said

those words.

"The previous two projects she handled turned out decently and brought great profits to our company. Having

her handle the upcoming project would putat ease." Tamara seldom praised others like that.

Yet, she also conveniently praised Xavier at that moment. "You suggested entrusting her with the projects back

then, and she didn't disappoint. That proves you have good judgment of people.".

Xavier's stern expression morphed into a slight smile. "She does indeed live up to expectations."

"One should know when to stop talking during meals and when sleeping. If you two wish to discuss work, you

can return to the study and do so." Edith disliked discussing work affairs at the dining table. Plus, she had

noticed something was amiss with Lily's countenance. The Fulton family valued their table manners. In the

following moments, only the sounds of cutlery occasionally touching plates filled the air. Nobody spoke after that.

As the meal neared its end, Xavier's phone suddenly rang. He speedily picked it up and answered it. He moved

so quickly that Lily couldn't see who the caller was. "Don't move. I'll go over right away," Xavier said.

Lily was sitting closest to Xavier and could hear a woman's voice on the other end of the call. The voice was

familiar-it was Sarah.

"Grandma, Mom, Dad, please continue with dinner. | have to handle sthings." Xavier stood and slightly

lowered his head to express his regret for having to leave halfway.

Yet, he never once acknowledged Lily. He said nothing to her, nor did he spare her a glance.

Shane and Edith frowned.

As for Tamara, she merely replied, "I understand that work is important. Be safe on the road." Xavier then took

his coat and left.

The dining room's atmosphere shifted in an instant.

Lily hung her head low as she only focused on eating. Still, she kept chewing on the food but couldn't swallow it.

Her mind was occupied with wondering, "When will | stop feeling sad because of Xavier and Sarah? How much

longer will these emotions persist? Maybe if | stop seeing Xavier after we get divorced, | won't feel as frustrated

about him and things will get better." "Why aren't you eating anymore, Edith?" Tamara couldn't help feeling

curious after realizing Edith and Shane had put down their cutlery.

Shane tried to soothe the tension by laughing. "Yeah, let's eat. You've worked hard, so you should have more

food."

On the other hand, Edith smiled at Lily. "You've worked hard, too. You should eat more..."

"Thanks, Mrs. Fulton Senior." It took a tremendous effort for Lily to swallow her food.

Lily didn't stay for long at Fulton Manor after dinner.
