Chapter 465 Unusual Movements-2
Merikh was restlessly sitting beside his accomplice, looking at the screen without breaking eye contact. The large monitor was filled with different-angle cameras' that gave them the live feed.
It was a crystal clear image, and one could even capture precise facial expressions in full quality. It was an unheard-of technology at this time and age, but with their backing, they mostly controlled the flow of this hardware from the source.
Even their R&D team was top class; it might be the best talents in the industry, but these thoughts were far from what he was feeling currently. His Lord had given him one chance to prove himself; he searched for the little girl named Elise, which had been going on for a few weeks now, and just when he had given up, fate rewarded him unexpectedly!
He employed several rogues and private forces in his arsenal to find her. More than ten different teams were searching for her nonstop without raising any major suspicion. With his forces being thinned out, he also employed outside help, and since the requirements were flexible and the funds were practically unlimited, he went ahead. He gathered even the most deplorable ones for the job.
One of them was a duo that had the worst track record in surveillance; in terms of skills, they were different from the elite forces from the family he served, but they were efficient in doing 'dirty' work.
For this reason, he didn't have much hope when he assigned them near the orphanage since it was the least expected place that they would find her. They already knew that she had moved out of the place, and since no paperwork had been filed, they were unable to trace her through there.
The Hope Orphanage had a good reputation, and under the management of Michella, no shady people were working for them. Since their size was a lot smaller, these people could only gain something by skimming the operational funds.
So, even though they could bribe someone to find out more, Merikh refused to do it on the pretense that their presence would be discovered by the masses. Even though the six families had immense wealth, they never planned to disclose their existence to the public.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtHe was close to his Lord, who was of direct lineage, but because his standing was low inside the family, he was never given any important tasks. Despite that, Merikh didn't know how much wealth his Lord had, which went to show how much important figures should be worth.
It was something he could never imagine, but he knew that if he messed up and did anything to disclose their ties to them. He would be finished, even though his families were not safe. He had heard previous horror stories from his fellow 'colleagues' and vowed to not break this forbidden rule no matter what.
Which was why he was panicking due to their plan going amiss. Although the detestable duo had found their target and adequately followed his orders, he had to make sure that this matter was kept under wraps. This meant he had to get rid of most of the people without any suspicion; fortunately, in his lifetime, he had gotten rid of many such people.
After all, his Lord was very fond of 'fresh' meat; every now and then, whenever he fancied something or someone, he had to be the one to devise and execute all his wishes!
" Why are you this stressed? This is a normal grab for our team?" The person sitting next to him said calmly. As the person lending a hand and overseeing everything, he had to be cool-headed even in these intense scenarios.
Merikh looked sideways at the thin man sitting beside him. he had no notable qualities at first glance, but he knew it was a big mistake to underestimate his capabilities. His name was Huxley, assistant director, and he was responsible for surveillance for the Lord's immediate family.
He wore a thick glass, but the lenses were ordinary; even his looks and attire were simple and perfectly blended with an 'average' looking person, but there was nothing average about him!
Merikh heard rumors of how vicious and cunning this person was even before formally meeting him. The number of times that he met him could be counted with both hands, but every time they did, Huxley would surprise him again and again.
Huxley had told him the reason why he dressed this way; it was sort of showing his sadistic nature when he ultimately met his prey at the end of each mission. He didn't know why, but it seemed like there was something from his past that still haunted him to this day.
He also knew why, despite being so young, he quickly rose through rank, and because of it, he was treasured by the family and his immediate superior, the director of surveillance. All in all, he could be dubbed as a once-in-a-decade kind of genius. Even the system that they were using to track was completed under his guidance to be as efficient as possible.
As for the reason why such a man was here to help him? It's for recognition. Being in good favor with his Lord meant he could enjoy a swift climb and steady stream of capital in the future. The family valued talent, but there was still much politics involved, which made people like Huxley, who was of unknown origins, climb to the highest ranks within the organization.
Although his Lord didn't have good standing in the family and was currently besieged by other more prominent contenders for the head of the house, he still had one thing going for him: Blood Connection!
Being one of the noble families, Lord's family reigned over all of Europe from the shadows. Even a small piece of pie was extremely alluring for Huxley, which was why he personally took on Merikh's request without much hassle. Huxley had to feign ignorance when other members criticized him, but even then, his reputation precedes him as one of the integral parts of the organization.
Even they would find it hard to get rid of a genius like him. He also had many fail safes in place in case such a thing happened, so it acted kind of a deterrent for others to openly suppress him.
" I know, but I somehow have a bad feeling about it," Merikh said solemnly. His gut feeling was screaming at him not to touch Elise, but he couldn't go against his order at this point. He was in a do-or-die situation!
" Hahaha, I always told you. You have to be bold to seize such an opportunity! No wonder you are still bootlicking that old husk all these years!" Huxley didn't pay any attention to Merikh's pessimistic nature.
During their many 'collaborations,' he had already understood how meek of a person Merikh was. If he had such a good standing in the family, he would have already been under the heir's faction!
" Don't dare disrespect the Lord in front of me! It's an honor for my family to serve a person of such high esteem!" Merikh was careful with his words. It might now affect Huxley, who was outside their faction, but if his Lord found out about it, Merikh would definitely suffer!
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏmThey were both eying each other out for a few seconds; both knew that what he said was not how he felt, but he was only being careful about it. Huxley was known to be a mischievous person taking pleasure in others' suffering, so it was not far fetch that he would secretly record him for his entertainment.
They were experienced people and knew how cunning the other party was. Even though they were acting friendly on the surface, given the opportunity, they would stab each other in the back for small gains!
" You are such a buzzkill! I consider you as a friend. Why don't you speak your mind with me?" Huxley pressed, enjoying other parties changing expression.
" Who is your friend? We are paying you huge sums of money for this job. You better not mess it up!" Merikh steered the conversation in another direction. He was not a kid playing verbal games with this lunatic; he wanted to finish his 'assignment' and head home with good news!
" Boss, we are here. I have retrained the duo; what are your orders?" Suddenly, they heard the voice through the peripherals. Huxley was a secretive person; even his subordinates didn't know his identity fully.
He couldn't use family forces for the job, so he employed the best team that he had worked with in the past. A total of four people whose skills were not that far from the team he usually worked with, so he had full faith that none of it could be traced back to him.
He was doing everything remotely in case they were discovered. He, too, had to avoid breaking the family's taboo. If he went against it, no matter how many hidden trump cards he had, no one could save him!
" Dispose of them like usual. Transfer the contents to the specified address along with the main package." Huxley nodded toward Merikh for confirmation, and strangely, he gave him a go-ahead. Merikh didn't care what happened to the duo as long as Huxley made them disappear; he didn't care what the psycho had in store for them; he only wanted the end result!
" Anything unusual to report?" He asked.
" Nothing, boss, we will do as planned. Gasing the whole place and swiftly retrieving the package."
" Good, proceed as normal, and remember the package should not suffer any injuries!" Merikh said through the microphone. The voice wasn't an issue; Huxley had inlayed a sophisticated voice changer in their communication. The other party didn't even know whether Huxley was a man or a woman.
" Roger that, commencing operation in one minute. Everyone take position!"
Huxley and Merikh watched through the video feed; one was relaxed while the other was holding his breath, fearing a mistake, but both didn't expect what was about to happen and how miserable their life was going to be because of who they touched unexpectedly!
