Fanny felt uncomfortable under Oliver's glare.

Her calling him her brother seemed to bring them back to their days of youth, when Oliver had been exceptionally
tender and gentle.
Fanny thought everything was going well.
But that day, when she walked to the door of his office, she heard him talking to Master Channing. Master
Channing’s health had been deteriorating over the years, and he was greatly dependent on medication to survive.
He usually didn't appear in the office.
The fact that he was here probably meant that he had something important to discuss with Oliver.
