The soft hum of cicadas filled the air as the sun dipped lower, painting the pool water with streaks of gold and
orange. | leaned back in my lounge chair, the cool metal pressing against my legs, and took a sip of my virgin

"You really think we'll get there?" | asked, my voice barely above
a whisper.
"I do," Laura said firmly. "We'll carry them with us, Jess. Always. But they wouldn't want us to carry the pain
forever. We'll get there. Together."

| took another sip of my drink, letting her words settle over like a blanket. It wasn't enough to erase the guilt or
the ache in my chest, but it was something. A small sliver of hope to hold
onto.
My phone buzzed again from inside the house, its familiar ringtone cutting through the peaceful evening air. |

"Just let her go to voicemail," | muttered, tipping my head back and closing my eyes. "She calls like 20 times a
day."
Laura chuckled softly beside me, her fingers toying with the rim of her glass. "You'd think she'd take a hint," she
teased, settling back into her chair.
| didn't respond, letting the warmth of the setting sun wash over me. It was one of the few things that didn't feel
complicated- just the steady heat on my skin, the gentle breeze tugging at my hair, and the soft lap of the pool
water nearby.
