Aside from rescuing and tending to the wounds of the injured, there was also the more gruesome task of gathering the corpses of dead martial artists.
Although Bai Wanli and the others had faced a similar battle, they did not have the energy to even care about the dead bodies during the last battle.
However, things were different now. This time, they had managed to ward off the mutants. Therefore, they had the right to scan the battlefield for remaining survivors as well as corpses. After gathering all the corpses, Bai Wanli and the rest bowed at the corpses three times as a show of respect. Although those who had died were mostly younger generations, they were still warriors who had sacrificed their lives for China and therefore deserved equal respect.
"Burn them…" Bai Wanli said as he closed his eyes. As martial artists, they valued traditions of China greatly which meant that burials were preferred over cremations. Burning the bodies of the dead was not something they would normally accept. However, they could not leave the corpses of the martial artists in Tokyo. They had no choice but to burn them into ashes so that they could be brought back to China after the war had ended.
As the flames engulfed the bodies of the dead, the corpses of the martial artists were all turned into ashes. The ashes were then kept away. They would be brought back to their home country once the war ended.
"Let's calibrate our losses!" Bai Wanli said with a sigh.
"We have indeed lost a lot of our men. In total, we have lost eighty-five men, out of which six are Level 4, while the rest are Level 3 disciples," one of the Rainbow Longsword Sect's elders said.
"Ahh! Such is the outcome of wars!" Bai Wanli sighed. He no longer sounded as confident as he did before the war started.
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtAmong the dead martial artists, most of them had been killed before Bai Wanli and the rest had even made it to the battlefield. After Bai Wanli and the others had arrived, the mutants were no longer able to kill many of these martial artists.
Although the martial artists faced a significant loss, the mutants did not benefit much either. The Rainbow Longsword Sect was actually very strong. Although they had lost a lot of their men in the battle, the mutants paid a very hefty price for it too. After Bai Wanli and the other back-up forces had arrived, the mutants were basically massacred. Their corpses left behind on the battlefield totaled up to three hundred.
Although a lot of mutants died in that battle, they had a much larger army overall. Therefore, three hundred was a small number to them. On the other hand, the Chinese martial artists were much more affected by the huge loss they faced.
"You can't treat me like this! I deserve to be treated fairly as a hostage!" Right then, Walker started shouting in English. As many of the younger martial artists despised him, they spat at him or kicked him when they walked by.
"Third brother, have a chat with the young lad! Ask him why he's shouting." Bai Wanli could not even bear to look at the face of this mutant whom he hated so much. Therefore, he asked Bai Wanjian to do the dirty deed.
"Leave it to me!" Bai Wanjian's eyes flashed with excitement. He was indeed a crooked man with a hobby of torturing others.
As he usually did not have a chance to torture others, Bai Wanjian was very excited now that he had a chance to torture Walker who also angered him by killing his comrades.
"Young lad! It's your lucky day. Come, let's play!" Bai Wanjian dragged Walker away from the crowd. He knew his methods of torturing were not well-received by others. Therefore, he decided to bring Walker somewhere else so that the rest would not be disgusted by his actions.
Bai Wanjian did not go very far. He merely dragged Walker to the back of a huge rock as he squatted down.
After two seconds, Walker started crying in pain. The sound he made was almost indescribable. It sounded almost inhuman, like an animal crying in pain.
In less than five seconds, Walker's voice turned raspy from shouting. The sound of Walker shouting and crying was accompanied by a crackling sound of bones breaking. The sound gave the nearby martial artists goosebumps from just hearing it.
"You need to look after your brother…" Toward the end, Grandmother Yuehua said disapprovingly. Walker's cries from being tortured was unbearable. Even if the martial artists hated the mutants, they still felt pity for him.
"Third brother! That's quite enough! Ask him what he knows!" Bai Wanli shouted.
"Brother, you know that I don't understand their dumb language!" Bai Wanjian said almost excitedly.
"I… I understand… I understand Chinese! Ask me anything! I'll tell you! Please! Please let me go!" To everyone's surprise, Walker confessed.
"Can you be more of a man, please? Why can't you just hold on a little longer?" Bai Wanjian said angrily. He seemed to want to enjoy torturing Walker a little while longer.
"I'll tell you everything! Please just let me go…" Despite how fierce Walker was previously, he was still only a spoiled brat. After being tortured by Bai Wanjian, death was perhaps the most precious gift he could ask for. Therefore, he had very little willpower left for resistance.
"Alright! Tell us then! What are the capabilities of your mutants? What's your objective this time? What are your other plans?" Bai Wanjian asked.

Just as Walker was being tortured and interrogated by Bai Wanjian, the mutants in Jiang Fei's areas were also getting ready to attack.
"Captain, the mutants are getting ready!" 0541 was the first to discover the mutants' movements.
"Alright!" Jiang Fei nodded as he turned around to speak to the young martial artists, "Everyone, get ready to fight! I'm sure you have all had enough rest!"
"Fight? Brother Jiang, where is the enemy?"
"Yeah! There's no enemy around!"
…
"Shut up, all of you! From now on, you do not need to know too much. Just do as I ask. Whoever objects, leave now!" Jiang Fei said forcefully. He was getting ready to fight. If these young martial artists would not listen to his command, they would only be a burden to him and even put everyone else in danger. Jiang Fei would not allow that to happen.
"Aren't you a little too forceful?" Clearly, there was a disciple who was disobedient. Many of these disciples were top performers in their own sects. Otherwise, they would not have been sent to fight alongside Jiang Fei. They have gotten used to being respected in their own sects. Therefore, it was nearly impossible for them to completely obey Jiang Fei's commands.
"Who is this fellow?" Jiang Fei asked Yang Po coldly.
"He is the Solitary Cloud Palace's main disciple, Liu Peng." Yang Po seemed to be very familiar with the person.
"Solitary Cloud Palace?" Jiang Fei was stunned. He had never even heard of the sect. However, he could understand why. After all, regardless of how much the disciples of the main sects disliked Jiang Fei, they would not dare to speak against him during such a crucial moment. This fellow either wanted to get attention from the females around or he was forced to act on behalf of the other disciples who had intentions to object Jiang Fei's command.
