After regaining her freedom, the receptionist ran away from Mason.
Winnie gestured for Jasmine to console her. She had already told Jasmine to offer the best
compensation and counseling services to the receptionist to resolve the matter.
She then instructed the leader of the security guards team secretly, “Don’t spread what happened
today. This is my personal matter. Everyone present will receive some compensation. Understand?”
“Understood, Mr. Garland.”
Winnie nodded before bringing Mason into her personal elevator which did not have a surveillance
camera installed.
In the confined and tiny space, she said to Mason, “Looks like you’ve already healed. When you were
unconscious, I made a deal with your subordinate. Didn’t he give you your share after you woke up?”
“No.” Mason seemed uninterested in the deal that Winnie was talking about. “We split up.”
“Huh? Why are you looking for me, then? Did someone from the other side hire you to kill me?”
“No!” Mason frowned. “I’m here to ask for your help, not to kill you. I would’ve already made a move if I
wanted to kill you. It isn’t convenient to speak in the elevator. Let’s talk elsewhere.”
Winnie nodded. “Let me ask you a question first. Do you know how’s Harold now?”
“I heard something about him. Allegedly, he fought with Leandro afterward. Their business has
basically been terminated by Shaun. He went missing and is currently hiding in a place no one knows
about. However, I’ve heard some rumors that he’s planning to take revenge on you. Be careful
recently.”
Winnie nodded. “I know about that already. Thank you for reminding me.”
As they spoke, the elevator stopped.
Winnie walked out first. “Follow me.”
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtShe planned to bring Mason to her office. The reason why she did not take him to the other meeting
rooms was that those larger places might have a lot of surveillance cameras.
Yet, since Lisanne was still in her office, she needed to deal with that first.
When she walked into the office alone, she saw Lisanne standing there warily while clutching a vase.
Seeing how overly anxious Lisanne was, Winnie strode toward her and said softly, “Lisanne, we don’t
need this, so put it down. I’m bringing someone in to talk. Wait for me in the lounge.”
“Did you really bring him up?” Lisanne shot a cautious glance at Winnie and lowered her voice. “Do you
really know him?”
“Yeah. He’s the team leader of the mercenaries I worked with in the past. His name is Mason Manfield.
Lucas introduced him to me, actually.”
When Lisanne heard that it was her brother who had introduced him, she became slightly more
relieved. “I’ll wait inside. If I realize that things aren’t going right, I’ll call the police immediately.”
“Don’t worry. Nothing will happen.”
After Lisanne entered the lounge, Winnie invited Mason in. The moment he closed the door, he asked
her, “Did Greta contact you after you came back?”
“No.” Winnie frowned. I’ve got a vague impression of what happened to Greta…
When she first returned and wanted Mason’s team to help her find Christopher’s corpse, she heard
Mason’s subordinate mention something.
That person said that Greta disappeared into thin air after that day and did not even visit Mason when
he was hospitalized.
If that’s the case… Winnie asked Mason, “You still haven’t found her? Did she disappear?”
Disappointment washed over Mason when he heard her question. “Looks like she didn’t contact you.”
Curious, Winnie asked, “Why are you so certain that she’ll contact me?”
Mason’s brows furrowed. “I don’t know. I have no idea who she’d find after leaving me and that place.
Despite working on so many missions for our boss, she was the happiest when working for you. She
laughed a lot and even became more talkative. I think that you’re different to her.”
“Really?” Winnie frowned, thinking that Mason’s guess was quite strange. “How different?”
“Sunshine.”
“Sunshine?” That increased Winnie’s confusion. “I don’t know what you mean.”
Mason’s brows knitted together into a frown. “I didn’t understand at first but I got a clearer inkling
afterward.”
As he spoke, he fished out a palm-sized plastic envelope from the pocket sewn at the hem of his shirt.
After he placed it carefully on the table, Winnie picked it up and scrutinized it closely.
She discovered that there was an old photograph inside the envelope.
From the looks of it, there were supposed to be two people in the photograph.
One of them was Greta while the other person had been torn away. The word, ‘sunshine’, was written
on the top right corner of the photograph.
Doubts arose in Winnie’s mind as she stared at this strange photograph.
She asked Mason, “Who’s beside Greta? Is it you?”
“No!” Mason continued frowning. “She’s been carrying this photograph around even before I knew her.
She treasures it a lot and would always stroke the word written on it. However, she’s gone without
taking this photograph.”
“But I’m sure that the person torn away from this photo isn’t me. Even if Greta wrote the word
‘sunshine’ on it, what does that have to do with me?”
Mason choked up as he spoke. “Greta loves the sun. One of the things she always told me is that she
hoped that the sun would shine over that dark and dirty place. When we were working for you, she
suddenly told me one night that you smell like sunshine. Despite being with her for so long, I’ve never
heard her describe anyone as smelling like sunshine. You’re the only exception.”
Follow on Novᴇl-Onlinᴇ.cᴏm“Smelling like sunshine…” Winnie remembered it instantly. In fact, she had a very strong impression of
it as it was the first time someone described her that way.
Greta was the one who did it.
“Yeah, she mentioned it to me before.”
She remembered Greta saying how she was different from the other employers.
When she asked Greta why she was different, Greta replied that she possessed a sense of
righteousness that other employers did not. It smelled especially like sunshine.
Back then, her interest was piqued as she had not expected anyone to describe her like that.
Greta said that she loved the smell of sunshine. She hoped that one day, the sunshine would cascade
down the dark soil and illuminate every dirty corner of the world.
Although she was a mercenary, she did not seem to enjoy being in that rich yet violent place. In fact,
she hated it to her core.
But…
Winnie said, “She has never contacted me.”
“Can you help me find her? I’m begging you!” Mason fell to his knees in front of Winnie as he spoke.
“When I investigated you afterward, I found out that you and your husband are very influential in
Chanaea. I think that it’s highly likely that Greta has come here. If you help me find her, I’ll do anything
for you.”
“But why do you think that she came to Chanaea, Mason? Perhaps, she has already…”
“Impossible! I have a feeling that she’s still alive, just that she has left me. Look carefully at the
background in the photo. There are Chanaean characters on it and the architecture is very similar to
that in Chanaea! She also mentioned to me once that she really likes the harmonious environment in
Chanaea. If she left, I can’t think of anywhere she’d go other than Chanaea!”
