Chirpy, as if understanding the commotion, flapped her wings and circled in the air before landing in the center of the cushion,
tilting her fluffy little head proudly, "Chirpy is the queen, the queen!"
Everyone burst into laughter, "Yes, yes, Chirpy is the queen, the queen of our household!"
Pleased with the attention, Chirpy mimicked human laughter with a series of chuckles and then burst into song, "Twinkle, twinkle,
little star, how | wonder what you are..."
She was quite the talent, able to finish an entire song, and all self-taught.
The family clapped along to her tune. Just then, Laura knocked and entered, bringing William a steaming cup of ginger tea, a home
remedy for his cold.
Chirpy, seeing the color and smelling the pungent scent, thought it was medicine, panicked, and flew behind the curtains,
"Medicine time, needle time!"
Although she was a parrot, she was the little darling of the family, with her vet for regular check-ups and vaccinations.
Kane chuckled, "It's just ginger tea, not medicine."

He took the cup and gulped it down in one go.
Laura paused, the lollipop she had prepared for him still in her hand!
William wasn't fond of the strong ginger taste, but he always drank his tea obediently, never refusing. He'd just need to alternate
each sip with a lick of his lollipop.
"Master William, your lollipop..."
Kane broke out in a sweat, having forgotten again. He quickly took the lollipop, unwrapped it, and popped it into his mouth, then
asked deliberately, "Laura, am | brave today? | finished the ginger tea in one go, just like Kane would."
Laura had watched William grow up and knew him best. She couldn't let her spot any slip.
She nodded, "Indeed, Master William, you are very brave today. If you feel unwell at any point, letknow, and I'll make you
scold medicine."
"I'm feeling quite alright now," Kane said with a smile.
Laura picked up the cup and left the room, seemingly without suspicion, and Kane breathed a sigh of relief.
What a challenging day it had been!
His relief was short-lived, however, as his unease returned with the arrival of Leopold.
Leopold brought a fruit platter. Instead of leaving, he settled onto the sofa to watch the festivities.
Kane was on edge. His father never just sat and watched them play. Had he discovered something?
Now they were playing the snack-guessing game. They placed Chirpy's treats in one bowl and left the other empty, switching them
back and forth, challenging her to guess which held her treats. If she guessed right, she'd get to nibble on them.
Leopold poured himself a glass of juice, his gaze deep and contemplative as he observed.
Kane occasionally glanced at him out of the corner of his eye.
"Uncle Leopold," Kane said, trying to sound casual, "I heard you were supposed to be busy today with meetings and such, how
cyou're back so early?"

"I pushed them to another day," Leopold replied nonchalantly, "Your mother isn't here today. Don't | need to cback early to
look after you?"
Kane stuck out his tongue when Leopold wasn't looking. His father had never been this keen on babysitting before.
"We've got uncle here playing with us and don't need supervision."
"Do | make you uneasy being here?" Leopold asked, his deep eyes glinting mysteriously under the light.
"Not at all," Kane shook his head. Not uneasy, just scared of being found out, with his heart in his throat.
At that moment, his smartwatch buzzed with a call from William.
He and Aurelia were on their way home, soon to arrive.
"Chirpy's coming, be careful, she'll recognize you for sure."
"We'll switch back in the car."
Kane went outside to fetch Chirpy's cage, saying, "Chirpy has had enough fun for today. She needs to rest, or she might get sick."
