My mind went completely blank. I clutched my phone tightly, but I had no idea who to call.

The airport announcement snappedback to reality. I quickly found Yasmine's number and dialed it, but all I heard was a cold, automated voice. The phone was turned off.

I rarely called Yasmine's parents. I searched my contacts for a while before remembering what names I had saved them under. The phone rang for a long tbefore someone finally answered.

I couldn't even greet them before I nearly broke down, asking, "Mrs. Warren, where's Yasmine?" "Yasmine?" The person on the other end was trying to suppress a sob. "Ari, you and Yasmine have been close since you were kids. I'm begging you, please help her..." I had met Yasmine's mother many times. She was a university professor, always calm and elegant. Her gentle smile made her very approachable. But now, she was sobbing uncontrollably over the phone. "Mrs. Warren, please don't cry. Where are you and Mr. Warren? I'll cover right away!" I pinched my thigh hard, forcing myself to stay calm. No matter what happened, I had to take care of Yasmine's parents in her absence.

Suddenly, there was sstatic on the line, and the next second, it was clear someone else had taken the phone.

"Ariana, I'm Yasmine's dad. She is fine. Don't worry. We can handle this ourselves." However, I couldn't stop worrying. My nails were digging into the floor as I heard more arguing on the other end.

"At a tlike this, you're still worried about your pride? Ariana can help us. She can help Yasmine! Givethe phone!" Her voice was firm.

All I could do was try to comfort them. Once I got a clearer picture of what had happened from them, I felt a wave of despair wash over me. Yasmine had attacked someone with a knife at their last academic seminar and was now in custody. No wonder I couldn't reach her.

But she was a lawyer herself, someone who would never knowingly break the law. Something must have happened that I didn't know about. I was sure she wouldn't have acted so recklessly unless something serious had driven her to it No wonder I had been feeling so uneasy these past few days. It was because Yasmine was in trouble. I checked the flight schedule and saw that I could still make it to see Pete arrive.

My anxiety eased slightly. Having someone by my side would at least stopfrom feeling utterly hopeless.

As tpassed, passengers from Pete's flight began to walk out of the terminal, but I still didn't see him. I tried calling him, but his phone was switched off.

As most of the passengers had already exited, I went to the service desk for confirmation. They toldthat all the passengers had disembarked. Yet, I still couldn't reach Pete on his phone.

My earlier calm started to give way to panic again. My departure twas getting closer and kept redialing Pete's number over and over. Finally, the airport's announcement urgedto board. Even then, I held

on to a last shred of hope. I kept looking back at the empty terminal, haping Rete would magically appear from somewhere. However, the vast airport held no one who looked like him.

I closed my eyes and took a deep b breath. I stepped into the bearding gate alone, letting the plane carry my ET heavy heart into the clouds. RULE #1 choose married women They have reason to keep things secret, as do you.
