Chapter 151 Scorn
There was no answer.
Josephine knocked on the door two more times after that before the door finally swung open. Lewis
stood at the door coldly as he looked at her, his stance radiating superiority.
She signed out of habit, “Eat.”
Lewis stared at her fingertips, his eyes darkening. Suddenly, he grabbed her wrist and pushed her
against the wall.
“Can’t you speak now?”
Josephine stared at his face, merely inches away from hers. She opened her mouth, but nothing came
out.
Her lips were uncooperative, and the pace at which she spoke was slower than when she signed.
Despite her prolonged efforts, no words emerged.
Lewis gazed at her indifferently. His thumb rubbed against her cheek before it traced the outlines of her
lips.
“What were you thinking? I asked you to come back with me, and you refused, then you went and
jumped off a cliff. Now, you’re in front of me and asking me to eat? What’s the meaning of all this?”
She bit her lip, her gaze burning as she looked at him. She didn’t know how to explain any of it to him.
Lewis‘ voice was calm and composed, as if he were simply holding an everyday conversation. with her.
“Is being with me that unbearable for you?”
She shook her head.
“Do you feel that everywhere, as long as it’s not by my side, is freedom to you? Even if it means
death?” His cool voice was tinged with inexplicable traces of melancholy and
disappointment.
Josephine’s heart sank. She raised her hand and grabbed his fingers, looking deeply into his
eyes.
There wasn’t much emotion in his eyes. The way he looked at her was no different from usual.
Yet, Josephine felt somewhat uneasy.
She needed to express the words she couldn’t speak somehow, so she stood on tiptoes and pressed
her lips against his. It was the only thing she knew how to do now.
Lewis was unmoved by her actions. He let her kiss him clumsily, offering nothing in return..
His stoicism shattered her heart. A surge of bitterness washed over her, and tears blurred her
vision.
Before, as long as she was the one to initiate, Lewis would respond to her touch no matter how angry
he was.

Josephine raised her hand to unbutton his shirt.
Suddenly, he grabbed her wrists, and she was forced to look at him. Anger flickered in his eyes as
soon as her gaze met his.
Lewis grasped her waist and forcefully turned her around, pressing her against the wall.
“Is that all you know how to do?
“Did you do this to Seth too?” His breath fanned her ear. His voice was low, but every syllable he
uttered pierced her heart regardless.
“Do you
think every man would fall for this trick of yours?”
Her face was pressed flat against the wall. She tried to shake her head as she felt a chilling sensation
spreading through her body.
“N–n–no-.” She forced the syllables out of her mouth.
“No, what?”
“There’s-” Her face was red, and yet there was no way she could speak a complete sentence no matter
how hard she tried.
“Yes or no?”
“No-
“No? If not, why did you listen to everything he said?” His fingers landed on her waist, his voice low and
hoarse. “Or, is it that you simply lack the attention of men?”
Upon hearing those unbearably ugly accusations, the tears in her eyes couldn’t help but fall.
“Am I not enough to satisfy you?”
Josephine shook her head frantically. She turned with much effort and looked at him pleadingly.
“Ea–ea–eat.”
The corners of his mouth curved upward. There was a hint of mockery in his smile.
He released her and turned to walk downstairs. “Eat it yourself.”
Josephine turned in his direction and watched his back. She raised an arm to wipe away her

tears.
She clearly saw that flash of scorn in his eyes when he looked at her just now.
He despised her.
She should have noticed it earlier. The night before, in the cave, he had restrained the madness in his
eyes and did not touch her.
Perhaps there had been a brief moment of wonder or even curiosity as he discovered for the first time
that she could speak.
And yet, that curiosity was nowhere near enough to outweigh the magnitude of the choice she had
made in the homestead. It could never excuse the fact that she’d abandoned him and run
toward Seth instead.
He was a proud man. He would never sit back and let the things he owned betray him and run into
someone else’s arms.
In his eyes, her behavior meant that she had left him in body and spirit. As long as she had done it out
of her own accord, it was the lowest, filthiest betrayal and disgrace she could possibly inflict upon him.
His chasing after her and jumping off the cliff after her was the greatest kindness and magnanimity he
could ever show her.
Josephine went downstairs and looked at the gradually cooling dishes on the dining table. She sat
down wordlessly.
She sat there at the dining table all night.
Eventually, she fell asleep with her head on the table. When she’d awakened, it was already morning,
but Lewis had never returned.
Noiselessly, Josephine grabbed her utensils and ate a few bites of the cold food.
Then, she changed and hailed a cab to the company.
She supposed she could only see him in the company now.
When she arrived, she sensed an acute shift in the atmosphere. Something was off. She hadn’t heard
anyone talking to one another as she made her way to her office.
Contrary to its usual vibrance, the current atmosphere was lifeless and dull.
“Josephine, did you take another day off?” Her colleague smiled and greeted her.
She nodded and went to her own workstation. She hadn’t been to work for too many days. She had
long forgotten about the work she was supposed to do.
Still, she vaguely remembered that Hilary was supposed to bring her her workload.

And yet, having waited for more than half an hour, Josephine did not see Hilary in the office. Even her
computer was turned off.
She wrote a line on a piece of paper and walked over to her colleague beside her.
Her colleague read the paper and replied, “You haven’t been to the company for so long, so you
probably don’t know this yet. The company is implementing some new personnel changes. A lot of

“A few people in our department have been transferred too. There will probably be a new batch of
employees coming in in the next few days.”
Upon hearing her colleague’s words, Josephine realized that their department was indeed short of a
few of its usual employees. Besides herself, only two other employees were sitting in their
workstations.
Josephine wrote, “Is it because of the shareholders‘ meeting?”
“The shareholders‘ meeting?” Her colleague was rather surprised. “I don’t know about that, but Miss
King should know. How did you find out about the shareholders‘ meeting anyway?”
Josephine hesitated for a moment before writing, “I guessed it.‘
“Oh, in that case, I really don’t know. All I know is the personnel changes in the past few days have
been drastic. Everyone’s pretty much on edge around here all the time. You probably won’t be affected,
though.”
Everyone there knew that Josephine had been brought in by Conrad. Her strong connections with the
higher–ups meant that she naturally did not have to worry about being transferred or losing her job.
Josephine lowered her gaze. Just as she was preparing to return to her workstation, her colleague
tugged at her sleeve. “Hey, Josephine, could you deliver this file to President Alvarez. for me? I’m kind
of afraid to go in there right now.”
Josephine stared at the file for a few seconds before accepting it and nodding.
“Thank you so much! If I’m still working here after this nightmare that is the personnel. change, I’ll buy
you lunch!”
Josephine smiled and went to the president’s office with the file.
Upon knocking, an unfamiliar voice sounded from within. “Enter.”
She pushed the door open and saw a man she had never seen before sitting in Lewis‘ seat.
The man was about twenty–seven or eight. He wore a suit, and his features were delicate. His
composure exuded an air of elegance.

Josephine thought she’d walked into the wrong room. She raised her head and reread the words on the
door. This was indeed the president’s office. She was not in the wrong room.
She surveyed the office again, but Lewis was nowhere to be found.
The man was reading another file, his head lowered. As she entered, he raised his head and asked,
“What can I help you with?”
Josephine hurriedly handed the file over to the man. It was also then that she caught sight of the name
card placed on the desk–Kiran Alvarez!
