Chapter 1004 Sly As A Fox
Naturally, Ning Ran merely wanted to test Rong Xiao.
The latter assured her that he was willing to do anything for her. However, Ning Ran couldn't help but wonder if his
promise was only limited to just financial-related matters.
When it came to deciding whether to turn Rong Jilin over to the police, it was not solely Rong Xiao's call to make.
The one who should decide was Nan Chen.
In other words, if Nan Chen deemed it necessary to have the police apprehend Rong Jilin, he would still take action
even if Rong Xiao disagreed. Ning Ran would stand by Nan Chen's decision too.
To her surprise, Rong Xiao actually agreed to Ning Ran's request.
“Wait,” interjected Ning Ran, trying to stop him.
Confused, Rong Xiao gazed at Ning Ran. “I must admit that I haven't been able to guide him properly. He has been
straying further from the right path. It's only a matter of time before he gets captured. I'm already grateful for you
for not handing him over to the police immediately.”
“There's no rush,” said Ning Ran.
Rong Xiao then pocketed his phone, a sudden realization dawning upon him—Ning Ran might have been testing
him.
“I genuinely feel apologetic to you. I'm deeply ashamed of Rong Jilin's behavior. It's my responsibility as his father to
teach him, so it's my fault too. I'm really sorry. Regardless of any lingering animosity between our families, the
children are still innocent. Harming children is an unforgivable sin.”
Rong Xiao's words were sincere, devoid of any pretense.
His words triggered a question in Ning Ran's mind. “What grudge exists between the Nan family and the Rong
family?”
She was genuinely curious about this matter. But oddly enough, even Nan Chen was unaware of the full story.
While Nan Zhengde entrusted Nan Chen to lead the Nan family, he remained tight-lipped about the underlying
enmity between the Nan and Rong families.
Rong Xiao's expression froze. “You don't know?”
Ning Ran shook her head. “I don't.”
“In other words, Nan Chen doesn't know too.”
As expected, Rong Xiao was a seasoned man. He hit the nail on the head.

The business elites from the older generation were as sly as a fox.
Even if the tiniest hints were revealed in the conversation, they could figure out almost the entire picture.
Ning Ran did not deny it.
“Let Nan Chen tell you about it. If you find out but keep it a secret from him, you'll feel uneasy. But it's not
appropriate for you to tell him directly. Whatever secrets his grandfather refuses to share are undoubtedly not
pleasant ones. It might be better if you remain oblivious.”
He was right.
It might be an excuse, but his words made sense.
At that moment, Ning Ran's wariness toward Rong Xiao waned.
Regardless of whether they were related, she found him to be a respectable elder.
Their short conversation had already revealed Rong Xiao's grace and intelligence. She could not make herself
dislike him.
She could now empathize with her mother—any woman who encountered the younger Rong Xiao would
undoubtedly fall in love.
Yet, Ning Ran could not understand why they separated.
“All right, we can leave the matter aside,” she said.
She wanted to ask him why he left her mother and why he did not show any care and concern even when she was
left wandering alone outside.
However, she restrained herself from asking the question.
Forget it. I won't ask him.
Not only was it a sensitive topic, but it was also a long story.
More importantly, she would have to bring up their blood relations if they talked about it.
Ning Ran did not want to acknowledge him as her father.
Rong Xiao, being very careful and respectful of Ning Ran, did not bring it up either.
He merely expressed subtly that he was willing to provide whatever she desired.
Ning Ran felt that it was time to end their conversation.
“In the future, don't go near the school entrance. Nan Chen's men will be keeping a watchful eye nearby. They
won't hesitate to investigate anyone suspicious,” warned Ning Ran.
Rong Xiao nodded earnestly. “You're right. I was too brazen this time. I won't do it again. By the way, I heard that
those two kids are twins.”
When he mentioned the children, a glimmer of anticipation lit up Rong Xiao's eyes. After all, they were related to
him; they were his grandchildren.
“Yes! They're so adorable and smart,” replied Ning Ran.
Her heart softened when she saw the gleam in Rong Xiao's eyes, which revealed his genuine concern for the
children.
Rong Xiao looked like he wanted to say something, but he kept hesitating.
Naturally, Ning Ran knew what he wanted to say—he wished to meet the children.
Otherwise, he wouldn't have lurked outside the school and been taken as a bad guy by Qiao Zhan.
However, Ning Ran would not let him meet the children—at least for now.
He was Rong Xiao, the biggest shareholder of Prosperity Holdings.
Even though he had retreated from the public stage due to his illness, he was still the most representative figure in
the Rong family.
He was still considered the Nan family's enemy.
However, Dabao and Erbao are his grandkids.
Perhaps, fate had a way of being cruel, and reality could be heartless.
“I heard you've also met Rong Rong. You two get along well. She knows you are her...” Rong Xiao stammered, “S-
She's delighted.”
He had wanted to say that Rong Rong was happy to know that Ning Ran was her sister.
However, he hesitated, fearing that Ning Ran might say that it wasn't true.
“I've always treated Rong Rong like a younger sister. We met in Livingsfill. She's absolutely charming,” replied Ning
Ran calmly.
She was implying that their bond had nothing to do with blood relations; rather, they already had a strong
friendship.
Rong Xiao's face lit up with a smile. “That's wonderful to hear. Rong Rong mentioned that she'd love to meet you. I
was wondering if that's possible...”
“Why didn't she tell me directly?” asked Ning Ran.
“Well... Perhaps she's worried you might hate her...”
“Why would I hate her? None of this is her fault.”
Rong Xiao nodded, feeling relieved.
“In that case, allow me to arrange a meeting for her. How about having dinner together tonight?” Rong Xiao
proposed.
“Isn't Rong Rong in campus? Is she in Flower City?”

dinner.”
Ning Ran was astonished.
What move is this? A private jet for dinner? Is this what they call a priceless dinner? Do all wealthy people,
regardless of age, have the urge to act crazily rich?
“There's no rush. We can arrange another time,” Ning Ran said calmly.
Rong Xiao felt a little embarrassed. He had indeed been too hasty.
Embarrassed, he said, “When will you have time? I'll arrange for her to come.”
“Sure,” agreed Ning Ran.
It suddenly dawned on Ning Ran that Rong Xiao was so eager to have her eat with Rong Rong because he assumed
he could attend the dinner as well.
If he was lucky, Ning Ran might bring the two children along.
So, this is his plan.
However, Ning Ran wouldn't make such an arrangement. The matter between the Rong and Nan families was
highly sensitive, so she couldn't make impulsive decisions.
She preferred to maintain a simple friendship with Rong Rong, just like they had before, rather than establishing a
relationship as sisters.
It was hard to say which kind of relationship was better. However, at the current moment, being friends seemed
more comfortable and appropriate.
“If there's nothing else, I'll be leaving.”
Ning Ran was genuinely going to leave. If they continued the conversation, they would inevitably delve into deeper
topics, which she didn't want at the moment.
Maintaining the current situation with limited interactions would make things less difficult for both of them.
Rong Xiao nodded. “Send my greetings to Nan Chen.”
Ning Ran nodded in return.
“And this too.”
Rong Xiao took out two envelopes. “I don't know how to buy gifts, so why don't you buy something for the kids?”
Ning Ran glanced at the small envelopes. They probably contained debit cards.
She laughed. “Money?”
“One million for each for them. Buy them some gifts,” said Rong Xiao awkwardly.
“It's fine. Thank you on behalf of the kids.”
Ning Ran declined to accept the envelopes and turned to leave.
At this moment, she was actually quite touched.
